Word: apostasy

What it is: noun

How to pluralize it: apostasies

What it means: (1.) a total desertion of or departure from one's religion, principles, party, cause, etc. (Definition courtesy of Dictionary.com.)

Use it three times and it's yours! Using a word three times can help it stick in your memory.

When the Democratic politician switched to Republican, he was accused of apostasy by many.

It is complete apostasy for a vegan to eat cheeseburgers.

When Charlene left her church, she felt as though she had committed apostasy.

  1. This is a tough one! Let me think...

    1) The remaining cult members shunned Margot for her so-called apostasy.

    2) Many of my peers appear to commit apostasy every time they leave the church building and go back to school.

    3) To my mind, a Trekkie who cosplays as a Jedi has not committed apostasy, but many Trekkies would likely disagree.

    Well, I suppose they could be worse.
